Last Saturday the Latvian exhibition “Lost in the City” was opened at the Comic Art Festival Ligatura in Poznan – the biggest alternative comics festival in Poznan which took place for the first time.
For this release Martins Rokis & Kaspars Groshevs made several improvisation sessions during which they merged their sonic interests largely using digital manipulations of both synthetic sounds and acoustic sources such as percussions, voice, toy horn and glockenspiel. It resulted in live performances on Sound Forrest festival and taking part in project “Submergence” in Moscow and Saint-Petersburg.
Edited and mixed by Martins Rokis.
Cover art by Kaspars Groshevs.
This is back in 2008 when I “remixed” an old track from 2004 called “Kobraman”. The so-called-remix process was actually recording the same track on the tape, than back on PC, than back on the tape, than back on PC, for about 12 times or even more. I called it Trash Snowman version.

In October 2009 I was in Porto for Regenlab workshop which dealt with new cartographies and mental mapping. In ten days spent there I worked on sound route of the central part looking for unique sound sources that could be used in my composition. The result was 22 minutes long field recording collage in two parts: Day and Night. It was exhibited together with map and description showing the route and explaining the sound sources. After all I decided that the map isn’t obligatory; it explains the structure but I still made it as composition combining elements according to my sense.
So here is “Portosound”:

Mighty Latvian Internet Medias are reporting: Latvian comics have been published in Japan. Lovely Japanese comics magazine UZO has included some of our stuff in their latest issue number 11 which looks like this:
I’m still waiting to get my copy and take a look myself, but this whole thing looks nice. Japan rocks.
And you know what else rocks? David Sylvian and his band Japan (just the album “Tin Drum” though). And Mr. Sylvian is supposed to have new album I guess hmm:
I am back from Porto. It was great. It was combination of very stupid comedians, angry ocean and angry surfers, Tall Johnny from Barcelona and some field recording homeworks. I’m still thinking of proper way to present my “work” done there, since it’s more of a research-type thing, rather straight and illustrative soundwalk which might need some explainations.
I am also back from London. Maybe I should put some pictures from Frieze & Zoo art fairs (first one was insanely massive, the second one was massively rough and bit weird), but the cold weather has caught me unprepared.
I’ve moved from Porto to London for a few days, and than I missed my flight. Still thinking about the ocean and the lovely city, and the fact I am writting about Alejandra & Aeron for the magazine is not helping because they did a lovely album on Porto sounds few years ago.
You can download their stuff here (with their kind permission).
And here’s the first piece from barber shop:
I have to note I also did some soundwork in Porto – my map of the city which I’d love to share with you some time soon. First I have to urvive London and Frieze Art Faire, and finally get on airplane. Somehow I miss my miserable grey country right now.
I am currently in Porto for Regenlab workshop which gathers people from Spain, France, Lithuania, Latvia and of course Portugal. So far it’s been fun and interesting, working on mental mapping (in other words – discovering city on our own, finding special interesting places). All northern people come to Porto, it’s warm.
Hello. Finally here’s a video from our Russia trip. This is an edit from our Moscow performance, filmed by someone with out of control camera moves which made it hard to use more material, but why not – here’s a shaky shaky document of the live video impro done by me, and monster sounds done mostly by mister candycoveredclown.
And our Reverb Nation player still have some nice excerpts both from St. Petersburg and Moscow, and sum mo’.
And it’s ready – the new fashion film by Latvian designers Mare Mastiņa and Rolands Pēterkops, directed by Kristīne Kursiša. You can watch it below in pretty decent quality, though on big screen it should be a killer hit.
Another thing I should mention is that the music for the film is done by me.
This movie was done for contest Fashion Is Passion – follow the link to see other movies.
I just discovered new version of mareunrol’s (or Mare un Rol’s) where you can watch their fashion movie Private Detective, directed by Kristīne Kursiša.
This combo is now in process of making a new film and from what I have seen it’s going to be incredibly unbelievably great and beautiful stuff.
It seems these numerous blogs are perfect music-collector-freakazoid-nerd tool: they can show their pearls, make people listen to it, but at the same time we all know they got the original, they got The Hot Shit. Them not us. What else does a collector-freakazoid needs if not a feeling of having something special and rare.
Daniel Padden is the mysterious genius that plays with Volcano the Bear (seeing them in Riga was as uplifting as drinking 13 years old real scotch). He is also the man behind The One Ensemble, they manage to blend Celtic middle age stuff with kinda klezmerish thing via avantgarde approach and what not . They have a new release “Other thunders” which is very very very very good.
Here’s older piece by mister Padden’s Uno Ensemble – “Smok”
One of the most beautiful pieces of the biennale “The End” four synchronized video projections with two guys playing some melancholic country track in the middle of Canadian nowhere by Ragnar Kjartansson + he is living in Icelandic pavilion till the end of biennale and is painting his friend everyday while listening to some LPs and drinking lots of beer, man he rocks
Supersmall window at Distortion place that also had the only awesome bar in the whole Venice as far as I know + some unknown asian video with girl singing karaoke. This phrase got my attention.. for some 10 seconds.
My favourite performance artist Marina Abramovich; Australian pavilion’s Ken Yonetani with his sugar sculptures
This shall be continued hopefully as I saw some more interesting works and images. I shall continue with Australian mad max.
I remember few years ago some guy called Sean gave me this song, I though “Wow, what an amazing piece of trash”. It suited him – ragged artsy guy from states with blues brothers’ sun glasses, this irritating way of talking (“eeee-aaa-um-yeah”, you know, like the video artist type in Big Lebowski) and bottle of cheap white wine in his pocket. He made weird paintings and sculptures. They suited him well. Maybe he was a nice guy. He played bass in some French trash act called Poppel Strudel or something like that and I have a suspicion he wasn’t really much of a good bass player. But I am really glad he introduced me to the Gories.
Download one of the truly amazing minimalism masterpieces. It has captured my mind for long enough to say it’s more that meditative repetition trick-machine.
Tā nu sakritis, ka šajās nedēļās vairākos izdevumos ir kaut kas mazliet no manis ieskricelēts:
Jaunais Š! “istabā” un “tasty” galerijā.
New microsize Š! comics magazine is out, about getting/being lost in the city. My piece’s in it and also lots of other lovely comics. Gettt it at www.komikss.lv
Tāpat nupat iznācis jaunais žurnāla “Studija” numurs par Venēcijas biennāli, jaunajiem mākslinieciņiem spēlē, Armanda Zelča izstādi, superīgā igauņu gleznotāja Kinnapu izstādi utt. New issue of bilingual arts magazine out.
Un last not the least iznācis jaunais Veto Magazine bērniņš pēc ilgām, konvulsīvām dzemdībām. Veto māte barotāja katru bērniņu briedina ilgi un rūpīgi kā 12 gadus vecu viskiju. Iekšā par mūziku, tostarp sunn O))), un mākslu, literatūru, modi. Visos avīžu kioskos + “istaba”, “i love you”, “supernova” u.c.
Nuevo Veto Magazinas ist aus mit viele Beitrage an Muzik und Kunst. Mann kann diese Magazin in viele Kioske suchen.
This screen paralises cells leaving no other choice but to fix everything, catch everything, glue everything to the screen, leave no flaunting thing untied.
Mobile pictures. Ubu.web. Fun and glory. Everyone have something up their sleeves and asses, everyone can fix, tie, attach. Do I keep silent and nod? Do I say something and get endangered by revengeful bits and bites floating around for years and years and years? Do I pull out the wire (ouch, hurts more than suicide, right)? Do I read a book? Or two? Or three? Do I finally listen to all the music I have? There is no troubleshooting for these and other similarly ridiculous questions.
Hey, writing is fun, I can do this honey, I can recover from my emotional crisis. Hey, drawing is fun, I think I’ll be fine and won’t have urges to kill everyone in my gym class. Hey, this clay is super wet and cute, I think I will make a penis to sublime my desire for tens of penises.
Spoken piece by Richard Nonas from the lovely compilation LP “Airwaves” released in 1977, probably never re-released, and now available on ubu.web right here.
