Still about the same, because I finally have some spare time.
The Exhibition is over, but this how the exhibition double-cover catalogue looks like (with drawing by me).

So me and my good sir candycoveredclown are going to Moscow & Saint-Petersburg next week to participate in media project “Submergence”, on 30rd June we are in Moscow some where, on 3rd July in Petersburg’s loft project ETAZHI – Katushki space.
See you there than. Or somewhere else.

Me and my fellow course mates did an exhibition called “Rent 00-10″ in the space that used to be a pet shop. It went on for just ten days, featured ten artists and has a fancy catalog  now. Ignoring that it was a massive nerve fucker, money eater and time waster, this exhibit was a nice experience, especially because of the very special space we got. But of course we forgot Riga inhabitants are scared of places that sell nothing, art gallery is something they avoid and ignore. The only exception was the ending party when we had a naked guy in the first room standing for a few hours (Reinis Hofmanis did a photograph serie of art models – people who pose naked for money, so for the ending event one of them proposed to pose for a while). Needless to say, bypassers finally noticed our little exhibition.
Here are few pictures of how it looked like.

Done and done. As mr. ccc puts it – turns out it is possible to suck and blow at the same time. First part of festival “Sound forest” has ended, but stay tuned – we don’t plan to give up on screwing up your “musical enjoyment” – and this player is getting updated every now and then. Most recently – five bits from the concert.

Pelmeshkin does great party pictures – colorful, dynamic and there are always million things happening, and in the end it even looks like Riga is a nice place to have some fun times.

No jūnija Latvijas Radio pārtrauks finansēt “Radio Naba”.

Poet group Orbita has published new almanac, number 5, with short pieces by Baltic poets and writers, as well as visual works by (mostly) Latvian artists, including me. All texts are in russian, but visually it looks very neat and compact. If I could read in Russian bit faster, I’d enjoy this book even more.

So I’m back from Berlin, good times good times. Here are few pics from exhibition opening, underneath our fancy VIP bus with almost all exhibit artists (Anete Melece, Maija Kurševa, me me, Oskars Pavlovskis). On our way Maija sang great russian songs, and everything that followed is slightly unclear.

And the time has come – Chris Cunningham’s fancy ad is out. Though nothing original all in all, it still amazes how they got lucky with cruel Latvian summer and got 5 stunning sunsets in a row. And wind-effects look totally amazing as well. Nicely done I’d say.

I suggest germans to start making bio-cocaine.

I just found MTV art break done by my mate Oskars Pavlovskis. As always he’s done some mad animation work – half 3d, half drawn. By the way, the sound was done by me – first experience in the horror genre haha.

P.S. After watching MTV for almost week I can clearly see this monster beneath this horrible brainfucker.

New “Studija” issue is out. Still bilingual, still interesting. And again there’s a short text piece by me in the end – this time about Stockhausen’s “Song of the Youths”.

I’m currently in Eindhoven for the STRP festival, yesterday saw Squarepusher which was totally amazing. He is The Man. Half-improvised extensive set of his best shit over the years + new material with live drummer.
Kinda liked Aphex Twin + Florian Hecker as well with their brutal approach to history of electronic music during 2 hours set going through every possible sub-gengre and ending everything with 10 minute noize accompanied by videos of japanese extreme porn with shit eating, heavily distorted by digital glitches.
Venetian Snares did his same shit all over again, not interesting anymore. At all. The night finished with Benga’s dubstep set, which was great, especially at 5 in the morning when there’s not much left in your head.

Alright, it’s on! Since candycoveredclown & Kaspars Groševs are playing at Sound Forrest, we decided to make a quick myspace page, where you can listen to some of our improvisation stuff. Probably we’ll update it more or less often with new impros, so keep an eye on this baby!

Gandrīz aizmirsu – še ku reku mēs ar kursabiedriem sataisījām kalendāri, baigi milzīgo, ja kas. Evita uzmeistaroja dizainu, un katrs pa vienam mēnesim nofočēja. Re ku manējais februāris, nu jau sen kā aiztecējis. Kafijas vīrs cukura cepulē zīlē nākotni, bet pārsteigums sejā ta nebūs tā vai tā.

Almost forgot – here me and my course mates fixed a giant calendar, here’s my month. Evita Vasiljeva did a great layout, and all the rest made some photos. Here’s my coffee man with sugar hat telling fortune, but there will be no surprise in his face, no no.

Esmu satraukts!

Everyone who is looking for reason to come to Latvia, here it is: 15/16th of May there is festival Sound Forrest in Riga. This year’s program features flippin Extra Life (audio above), Sunn o))), Johann Johansson, Philip Jeck, Vladislav Delay, Au, Pivot, Hildur Gundadottir and others. And also me + Candycoveredclown. It’s all so very exciting!

There’s a Latvian magazine of contemporary visual culture and art called “Studija” (Studio), and the new issue is out. It has upgraded its design and content, and it has also become bilingual – both in Latvian and English, which is uberkool if you are not one of 379 Latvian speaking people in the world but still have a desire to know something more about art scene of Lettonie and not just that. Visit www.studija.lv
Oh, and this issue has also a little cd review of Terre Thaemlitz written by Monsieur Moi, and it seems I’ll be writting a bit about experimental music also for next few issues.

Just found this reissue of Oren Ambarchi’s release “Persona” – damn this man knows how to make simple things sound highly interesting. This record just like most of his solo work have the same bassy textures, little blips and details and pretty clean sound. Lovely for foggy day like this.

This Friday I’ll be warm-up-DJ-ing for Breakbot, French fella who does lovely remixes and not just that. So I was playing around with an old video from Latvian disco-pride act Zodiaks (Zodiac) who were really big in the USSR in 80’s, and this is what came out of that:

No, it’s not like the only thing I currently do is this, and finding different kind of media crap around net, I do other things too.. Like. Hmm. My head is going to explode, viruss has got me, but despite that here’s another edition of Visions.

This time there’s again some mad and pretty rare records, like Seattle-based duo Climax Golden Twins who make extremely weird music, combining field recordings with garage rock, with lo-fi drones et cetera.
Than there’s DonAtteller, very strange band with this years Turner prize’s winner Mark Leckey in it, they make some kind of Beefheartish-Residentish mix with electronics or I don’t even know how to call it, but check out their blog: http://sirbedivere.wordpress.com/ where you can download their releases, and also few releases they just enjoy so much they want to share it with the world.

Next is wunderkind drummer Chris Corsano with track from his early CDr, really raw noizy stuff, but really enjoyable, Fred Frith’s Massacre and another wunderkind drummer Robbie Avenaim with totally amazing track from his EP on Room40 label.

Another highlight is my recent discovery (I must shamefully admit), composer from pioneer days David Behrman who was one of the first to perform live with self-built bent circuits, often without any notation, so here’s one of early tracks, and I must say it sounds fuckin 21st century. Or vice versa – we haven’t gone much further than that.

Than there’s freaky opera-folk recording by Orriel Smith from Trunk’s compilation Fuzzy Felt Funk. It’s followed by San-Francisco collective Invisible 5 who call themselves “self-guided critical audio tour along Interstate 5 between San Francisco and Los Angeles”. It’s a very nice sounding political activism, and if you’re interested in hearing more from them, check: http://www.invisible5.org/ I’ll certainly use some more recordings from them.

Celine Mikolajczyk’s contribution to Laptitemaison’s compilation “Projet Insectes” stands out with at least witty and even lovely approach using little boys’ voices as interpretation of insect sounds, I must admit all the rest of this album sounds kinda boring and zzzzz.

Dielectric Field Recording All-Star’s release Re:Record brings some of the most interesting field recordings I’ve heard so far, every track is full of yummy sounds and weird events behind them, as I understood this record is also like a label’s good-bye fireworks.

And finally there’s funny little pieces from Janek Schaefer’s piece containing found recordings from some shop’s audio recorder, where people try out the device by saying first thing that comes into their minds. You can find this piece on www.ubu.com

And the last is Geneva Jacuzzi with absolutely lovely and bizarre piece. More than that, “Love caboos” has wonderful video.

I still like the colorful scizophrenia Gangpol and Mit are coming up to. Few years ago they were really spot on with their 8bit-ish music combined with these sort of cheesy images.

more about “Gangpol & Mit “Breaktime”“, posted with vodpod

Robert Ashley: “Popular music always ends after three minutes”

Number three is here, this time it’s so rich in flavour it could be delicious deep-fried Mars bar. Highlight for Visions #03 podshite are Brian Harnetty, guy who really surprised me by using historical Appalachian voice recordings, and upgraded them with his own instrumentations, which are at least weird, if not beyond this effete label. Geir Jenssen’s (mostly known as Biosphere) field recordings from his trip to Tibet, young Spanish musician and video artist Burbuja, who’s song “Who knows” also have lovely video (personally I found it too lovely and simple, but all in all it’s really not bad at all). Than some weird voice recording from singer, poet, performance artist Jana Haimsohn, found ubuweb’s amazing archieve, in compilation “Airwaves”. Than There’s Blake Stickland’s interpretation on muzak, playing around with sort of jazzy lounge music, after one of million Machinefabriek’s recordings, there’s a small piece from old LP by Jean Tinguely, that presented noizes his monstrous and beautiful mechanisms produced – there’s no point really in this record, because you really to see Tinguely’s installations with your own eyes, but the record is just weird souvenir I guess, it is followed by one of the softest Ginsberg’s blues ballad, I never knew he was so into blues music, and some pieces are kinda nice, some have brilliant lyrics (well actually most of them do). Than there’s small vocal piece pa Adachi Tomomi (this time without his Royal Choir), guy who is making really dadaistic vocal poems. Christina Kubisch’s elecetrical walk, which I was too lazy to experience in Riga few years ago, again the record just document’s installation, but it’s pretty interesting magnetic noize. And finally there’s brilliant piece by Ernst Reijseger & Alan Purves from their 1982’s LP – the whole record just takes my breath away with amazing performance by both musicians, and the final piece is one of the best electro-acoustic pieces I’ve heard by Louis Dufort. It’s not that easy to get music like this, and also a good one, so if you have some suggestions I’d be happy.

Enjoy!

And I’ve done my homework nicely, here’s proper second issue of my so called podcast or mix or whatever. This has a lot more going on, ranging from Japanese 80’s experimental punk to very early voice recordings, again with some exotic sounds, some noizy stuff, some free jazz and no wave, some tape music and field recording (jgrzinich’s recordings with old rusty Estonian telegraph lines), and this time it also features work by Latvian composer Martins Strautnieks (known as Martinez Gonzalez to some) with a new composition, and I must say it’s really enjoyable.

So here are my visions number two:

Alright, finally I’ve discovered how this fuckface wordpress thingie deals with audio files, it was much much much more easier than I thought, so I’ve decided finally to post up some of my radio show archieves. Little reminder – since 2002 I’ve been making radio show “Visions” on local independent (relatively) radio NABA every Wednesday from 10 to 11 PM (GMT+2), for some five years together with Martins Rokis, and now all alone, which incidentally means not at all for most of the time, as I am just too lazy or busy or sometimes both to visit studio and do my one-hour-duty. And now that I hear the future of radio is endangered I even feel kinda bad about those lost Wednesdays.
But we still have internet, and I’ve been wanting to do this for a while, and now finally.. here it is, first chapter of hopefully many more to come podcasts: I present to you my modest view on different aspects of recorded sonic media, be it obscure music or found sounds, spoken word, or so called field recordings, or whatever.
This first piece might be little bit half baked as a testing result, but here it is. I hope you will enjoy it!
